Artistic Influences

Len regards many artists as having had an impact on his approach. Here are just a few of the more significant painters who have been prominent in influencing Len's style.

Rowland Hilder

Rowland Hilder was an English marine and landscape artist and book illustrator. He has been called the 'Turner' of his generation following renowned landscape paintings of the Kent countryside where he spent most of his life. Len loves his work and has created a number of pieces inspired by Rowland. More

David Bomberg

David Bomberg was an English painter. He pained a series of complex geometric compositions prior to World War I. After seeing the atrocities of the War he changed his style to painting portraits and landscapes when he began painting again after the conflict. Events in people's lives shape the way they see things and what they do. Len believes that to change is to be inspired to improve and to grow as an artist. More

Edward Hopper

In 'Soir Bleu', Hopper paints himself as a clown because he thought of himself as a failure. Len's version of this painting is shown on the left. The man on the far left is identified as a pimp. At the next table is a bearded man with a soldier in uniform next to him. They are watching the heavily made-up lady, who was probably a prostitute. The couple at the table to the right are well-groomed and separate from the rest. The smokeless cigarettes seem to indicate a membership in a certain social strata. More

The best known of Hopper's paintings is 'Nighthawks' which is one of his paintings of groups. Again, Len's interpretation is shown on the left. It shows customers sitting at the counter of an all-night diner. The shapes and diagonals are carefully constructed. The viewpoint is from the sidewalk, as if the viewer were approaching the restaurant. The diner's harsh electric light sets it apart from the dark night outside, enhancing the mood and the subtle emotion. As in many of Hopper's paintings, the interaction is minimal. Both Hopper and his wife Jo posed for the figures and she gave the painting its title. More

Edward Seago

Edward Seago's work has been greatly admired, particularly by the Royal Family. HM The Queen Mother had a large collection of his paintings and King George VI enjoyed them, along with Princess Margaret. The Duke of Edinburgh became a great admirer of Seago and his work. From an early age, HRH Prince Charles became friends and took painting lessons with Seago. More
